Seasons- day 67

"Be better than you were yesterday!"

One of my least favorite sayings, and an incredibly damaging motto to hold. Be better than you were yesterday shows no understanding of the cyclical, moving, ever-changing rhythms of life.

There are seasons in life when you are able to get in great shape. When you're young and don't have small children, it is a great time to make fitness a hobby. Then, there are seasons when you'll gain weight, sometimes a lot of it. Like when you're pregnant, or have a newborn. Or when your life is consumed with working multiple jobs. When you are caring of an ailing parent or child. When you have been hurt and are recovering from an injury. But then, those hardships will pass, as they always do, even if it takes months or years. And a new season will emerge. You'll be financially stable enough to afford Orange Theory. You'll enjoy morning and evening walks with your husband, dog, kids, whoever. You'll lose weight and gain strength. But then, as all things return, so will the season of weight gain. And.thats.okay.

A daughter who works 8 hours a day, then drives to her father's house to assist with his end of life care, then heads home to cook, clean, launder, bathe, and care for her own children, probably isn't walking around with a perfect BMI. And that is ok. Its a season. Children grow and become independent, parents pass on, and you will have time to hit the treadmill. Sacrificing your temporary goals for the good of others, is good and holy and Christ-like, and is far more valuable than your waist size.

Ecclesiastes 3 tells us, there is a season and time for everything. There is a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, a time to laugh; a time to mourn, a time to dance; a time to get, and a time to lose.

To think that everyday you will be better, stronger, wealthier, happier, smarter.... it's just a lie. It's a lie told to us that makes us feel like absolute shit in a down season, and then superior and self righteous in an up season.

When things are bad, remember, this too shall pass.

When things are good, remember, this too shall pass.
